Establishment of a transnational cooperation: UW and ICS

From January 1, 2014 the University of Warsaw and the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (the Netherlands) have started cooperation which aims at implementation of the transnational project Warsaw School of Data Analysis. Implementation of the project enables PhD students from both universities as well as the individuals outside the academic community to raise their level of competence in the field of data analysis. The training cycle will consist of online compensatory/introductory course, a two-week summer school and online workshops. It will be developed in English to make the participants acquainted with specialized language in international communication. There will bedistance education (e-learning) methods and techniques used.

The foreign partner of the project, the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS), is the center for social research in the Netherlands (a joint initiative of the three Dutch universities: Utrecht, Groningen, Nijmegen). The work carried out in the ICS is based on research program strongly involving a deductive formulation of theories, the integration of theory with empirical research and advanced statistical methods as well as an interdisciplinary approach. Since 1986 ICS  offers doctoral studies and master graduate program with particular emphasis on data analysis. ICS collaborates with over 150 scientists from 86 universities in 21 countries.

On behalf of the University of Warsaw the project is implemented by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM), Institute of Social Studies (ISS) and the Center for Open and Multimedia Education (COME).

  • ICM provides Polish scientific community with high power computers and software as well as the technical and programming assistance in the field of large scale computer calculations and organizes courses and trainings. ICM does basic research in mathematics and natural sciences in the area of engineering, medicine, economic and sociological sciences.
  • ISS brings together scientists from the area of sociology, psychology, economics and political science conducting interdisciplinary research in 9 research centers. The scientific activity of the ISS includes among the others the creation of new theoretical models aimed at the integration of empirical data and standardized tools and methods of data analysis for the comparative studies. ISS also offers trainings for students and researchers.
  • COME is an organizational unit responsible for e-learning at the University of Warsaw. COME has developed an original and efficient methodology for the preparation and conducting of e-courses. In order to bridge social, geographical and time barriers in reaching the educational offer of the University of Warsaw it uses new communication technologies, multimedia and information tools.
